This is a late 1990s brief review of research on a variety of topics related to homeschooling (i.e., home schooling). Dr. Ray takes a broad sweeping and cursory look at many studies. Examples of the topics addressed are history, population growth, philosophy, pedagogical practices, academic achievement of students, psychological and social development of students, and success of the home educated in adulthood. This report is written for the layperson but provides 130 endnotes and several pages of research references for further study. It is a report that reflects the generally “positive” findings of research on the outcomes of homeschooling and does not use much space to critique the methodologies of the studies summarized. It is 24 pages in length, full color, and in an 8.5″ x 11″ format. The cover and a sample page of it may be viewed at www.nheri.org. This report is excellent for many purposes (e.g., reading for a college course on alternatives in education, helping parents decide whether to homeschool, to educate curious grandparents).
